Fernation vernation

BISCOT Silver medal winning series 2014.

watercolour on Fabriano 5
28.7cm wide x 40cm high

Silver award winning submission for BISCOT 2014, these paintings are the sum of five years work due for entry in the 2014 BISCOT competition. The requirements for BISCOT entry are submission of a minimum of six paintings on a botanical theme. The inspiration for this set of paintings for BISCOT is a verdant colour palette and the fascinating shapes and diversity to be found in the fern family. My love of ferns goes back to childhood walks and play both in Scotland and Nigeria, discovering ferns secreted away in water runnels, hidden up trees, unfurling and eking out life in unusual and out of bounds nooks, unbound by regular garden cultivation.

Arisaema ink shoots

Japanese ink paste on Lambeth cartridge
70cm x 50cm & 30cm x 50cm

I decided to come back to the ink shoots series as I enjoyed depicting the silhouettes and patterns within the arisaema so much. I chose to work on larger sheets and with some, I increased the size of the depiction as well. I am absolutely in love with Japanese ink paste and the effects that I can get with it, and really relish the moments when I see my plants in a captivating shape that I think will work for this series.

Arisaema biseasonal watercolour paintings

RHS Gold medal and BISCOT gold medal winning series 2019.

watercolour on Fabriano 5
450mm x 320mm

I decided (after lusting after these at various flower shows) to try my hand at growing arisaema, with no more gumption than a desire to own the flowers and having recently acquired a bit of garden and needing a topic for my final diploma year at RBGE, these paintings are the results of a number of years of growing and studying these amazing plants, which are happily really well adapted to a small Edinburgh garden (-_-).

Arisaema screen prints

Four and five colour hand drawn silk screen prints

I was intrigued to see if I could develop my ink shoot series with a screen printing process. I wanted to try a few things, the reintroduction of colour to the black and white image, and also the introduction of some kind of background element. I opted to work with geometric images in the background as I needed to find something simple enough to set of the detail in the plant images bit also something bold enough to stand strongly with them.

I used a simplified colour palate from my original colour matching for my water colour paintings and used the cataphyll* and stem colours in the geometric shapes, I was really wowed with the block colours and decided to really punch them up to compliment the almost black details. I have to say I loved making these, I really enjoyed the screen printing process, and I was also so please to be using the resources that I have worked with over a number of years to create new pieces of work with punch and vigour.

Arisaema ink shoots

Japanese ink paste on Lambeth cartridge
A3

While I was painting my Arisaema I wanted to illustrate these growing shoots because they were so fascinating, so I did a drawing for each of my specimens, it was such an amazing experience, one which I will be repeating! All of these have been sold.

I was inspired by Sarah Simblet who came to the Diploma course and did a day with us, she was amazing.
