An original watercolour of Crab apples in Dalry, Edinburgh.
During the first winter of lockdown I was looking for something to work with, I felt quite trapped in the middle of Edinburgh, despite being a really vibrant city in normal times, life felt quite grey during my hourly walks outside. My environment was largely cement, stone and tarmac and I felt compelled to seek out little patches of plant life in basement gardens, wee parks and window boxes. This crab apple was in my neighbour’s garden, and as I ventured out each day I was captured by the lovely golden fruits, and so Crab apple of Dalry was born.
